Las puertas de Taquimilán se centra en la relación entre Martín y Ceferino, a lo largo de diez años. Martín, porteñito arrogante, bajó al sur una década antes para recorrer los fortines de Roca y probar su tesis sobre la modernidad. Ceferino, abogado defensor de sus hermanos mapuches, sobrevive de remisero y tiene la mala suerte de ser su chofer.
De las inevitables discusiones surge una honda amistad, no de la mente, sino del corazón.
Ceferino, hoy más viejo y mapuche que nunca, envía un críptico mensaje que solo su amigo puede entender. Sin saber por qué ni a dónde va, Martin cruza en la noche el desierto patagónico plagado de recuerdos de aquel viaje que le cambió la vida. Ceferino ha tomado su última e inamovible decisión: no quiere otra operación del corazón aunque se la haga su hija. Si pudo elegir su vida, va a elegir su muerte, y Martin va a ayudarlo.
Recostado contra las montañas de la cordillera, Taquimilán espera que, como se repite hace tantos años, el Pueblo Mágico de Taquimilán llegue desde algún pliegue del tiempo. Cuando sus casas vacías y abiertas, surjan en el aire quieto del atardecer Ceferino cruzará una de esas puertas. Y al desvanecerse en el aire, tan mágicamente como llegó, él se habrá reunido con sus ancestros mapuches. Y por esas puertas, quizás, algún día volverá.
Su hija va a impedirlo, no quiere perder a su padre, ella puede salvarlo. Martín duda, su mente pelea con su corazón. Pero Ceferino está decidido.
El film fue rodado en exteriores de la provincia de Neuquén, y en interiores en Buenos Aires, con actores neuquinos.
“Poder elegir la muerte como se elige la forma de vivir confrontando con la obligación de “estar vivos” aunque sea atado a máquinas que nos mantienen respirando, esa idea me atraía.», dice el director. Y concluye: «La cultura mapuche y su cosmovisión me redondeó la propuesta. Me lancé a escribir la historia de Martin y Ceferino, filmarla y esperar a que al público le interese. Ese momento, finalmente, ha llegado.”
