Roca, un militar de mente fría y estrategia calculadora, vio en las vastas tierras de la Patagonia una oportunidad. No era simplemente un terreno a conquistar, era un espacio que debía ser sometido, un vacío que debía llenarse con la expansión de la civilización europea. Así, Roca lanzó una campaña militar en 1878, cuyo objetivo era doble: consolidar el territorio nacional y erradicar a los pueblos indígenas que lo habitaban.

La Conquista del Desierto fue un nombre irónico, un eufemismo cruel. No se trataba de un desierto en términos geográficos, sino de un territorio habitado por comunidades indígenas que habían vivido allí durante siglos. Mapuches, Tehuelches, Ranqueles y otros pueblos fueron catalogados como “el problema” que debía resolverse para la nación argentina. Para Roca, la solución era sencilla y brutal: la exterminación o la reducción a la servidumbre.

Las columnas militares avanzaron implacables, armadas con la más moderna tecnología bélica de la época, arrasando aldeas, matando hombres, mujeres y niños sin distinción. La estrategia de Roca no reconocía términos medios ni piedad. La tierra debía ser purificada de lo que él consideraba “la barbarie” para dar paso a la expansión de la civilización.

Julio Argentino Roca murió en 1914, dejando un legado marcado por la controversia. Su nombre, asociado indisolublemente con la llamada “Conquista del Desierto”, sigue siendo objeto de debate y reflexión. En la fría estrategia de Roca se esconde una lección amarga sobre el costo humano del progreso y la necesidad de recordar, siempre, las voces de aquellos que fueron silenciados en nombre de la “civilización”.

Y en el contexto de esta controversia, se enmarca el magnífico documental de Sebastián Díaz llevándonos por el relato de reconocidos especialistas por lo que fue esa tragedia vivida en nuestra tierra.
